Dressmaking Workshops for beginners and those wishing to improve their skills.  Choose a specific garment, techniques to build a sample portfolio, an evening class, half day or sewing school.

If there is something you would like to learn but it is not shown or you can't make the date please do call and I will try to work around you.

Workshops at the Midhurst Sewing Room aim to inspire and improve skills while working in a relaxed atmosphere with likeminded students.

The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.,

  1. Afternoon School

    Tuesday Afternoon Sewing School - Starts 5th May 2020

    You can make a garment of your choice, a skirt, shirt, dress or even a jacket or a pair of jeans. Bring along your pattern and fabric and learn all the skills you need.

    What You Need To Bring : The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.

    Materials Needed : Pattern, Fabric and Notions for your project

    Bring along your own materials or purchase from Bloomsbury Square Fabrics which is next to the Sewing Room. If you are buying fabrics on the day please arrive at least half an hour before the class starts to allow time to choose. Alternatively order fabric in advance,  have it sent to you or collect on the day of the class.

  2. Sewing With Marfy Patterns- 14th & 15th May 2020

    Sewing With Marfy Patterns- 14th & 15th May 2020

    Italian pattern company Marfy, founded in 1966,  produce wonderful designs for dressmakers who like a challange.  Patterns are hand cut to individual sizes, there are no seam allowances or instuctions.

    Mafy suggest that this true craftsmanship lets you save precious time, avoids useless time-consuming operations, and leaves you free to enjoy the true pleasure of sewing.

    As an introduction I have chosen 3 dresse for you to choose from.  Once you start sewing with Marfy you will love their bespoke designs and interesting details

    4009 is a jersey dress

    6156 can be made in jersey or a crepe

    6145 can be made from a woven fabric like jacquard, silk or crepe.

    The cost of the pattern is included in the workshop price.

  3. Overlocker part 1

    Overlocker Part 1 - 16th May 2020

    Take your overlocker out of the box and bring it along to our Overlocking day!  Learn how to thread your machine and how to set it up for finishing seams, and hems, constructing garments, simple decorative stitches and the perfect rolled hem. You will leave with samples and notes to give you confidence to use your overlocker for any project and get a professional finish.  All thread and fabric is included in the cost of the workshop. 

    Please when booking let us know what make your overlocker is.  If you don't yet have an overlocker but would like to try one let me know and you can use one of mine.

    The Sample Portfolio workshops allow you to build up a file of techniques to refer to when ever you need them. When you attend the first workshop you will receive a file to start building your porfolio then add to it on each workshop. Workshops In this series include, Zips, Seams and Hems, Pockets, Collars and Cuffs, Dressmaking Techniques, Advanced Dressmaking Techniques, Tailoring Techniques, The Importance of Pressing, Machine Feet.

    Interfacings help to support & shape your garment and it is really important to choose the correct one.  From Collars to Facings, Shoulders to Hems all areas could need interfacing.

    On this workshop you will find out what is available as well as how and where to use them.

    Once you have your Perfect Fit Skirt it's time to refine the detail for a more designer look.

    By changing darts and side seams, shaping the hem and adding bindings you can improve your skirt even more.

    What You Need To Bring : The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.

    Materials Needed : your skirt pattern1m of 150cm wide medium weight fabric, 1m Lining (optional), .25m Woven Fusible Interfacing, 23cm concealed zip, matching thread
