Dressmaking Workshops for beginners and those wishing to improve their skills.  Choose a specific garment, techniques to build a sample portfolio, an evening class, half day or sewing school.

If there is something you would like to learn but it is not shown or you can't make the date please do call and I will try to work around you.

Workshops at the Midhurst Sewing Room aim to inspire and improve skills while working in a relaxed atmosphere with likeminded students.

The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.,

    Perfect Fit Trousers or Jeans - 23rd & 24th January 2020 FULLY BOOKED

    If you have had problems making trousers or jeans to fit then this is the workshop for you.  To save some time I have toilles made in all sizes for you to try on.  After altering the pattern to fit you will go on to make your perfect fitting trousers or jeans.  Learn how to insert a fly zip and add perfect pockets, waistbands, seams and hems to complete your trousers or jeans.  The commercial pattern is included in the cost of the workshop

    What You Need To Bring : The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.

    Materials Needed :  For Jeans : You will require 2.2m (150cm wide) Stretch denim with at least 2% lycra, 45cm of lining for pockets, .45cm interfacing, trouser zip, jeans button, matching thread, top stitch thread

    For Trousers : You will require 2.2m fabric 150cm wide, small piece of lining for pockets, .5m woven fusible interfacing, trouser zip, 2 hooks & bars, matching thread

    Bring along your own materials or purchase from Bloomsbury Square Fabrics which is next to the Sewing Room. If you are buying fabrics on the day please contact Victoria at Bloomsbury Square to make an appointment. Alternatively order fabric in advance,  have it sent to you or collect on the day of the class.

    If you are stuck with a pattern or instruction, would like help with a specific technique or help with fitting then booking a Mini Fitting & Finishing workshop might be the answer.

    With a minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 people you will receive lots of personal help with your project.

  3. Quilted Bag- 29th January 2020

    Quilted Bag- 29th January 2020

    The front of this fabric bag is quilted and has two internal pockets and two options of straps, you can either use the same fabric to create a strap or purchase a purpose made chain strap. You will learn some advanced construction techniques during the process. 

    What You Need To Bring : The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.

    Materials Needed :  You will need soft furnishing weight fabric or medium weight wool for the outer bag and fabric for the lining. We will also use wadding, interfacings and bag hardware which you can bring along or it will be available to purchase in the workshop. Pattern included in the workshop costs.  Sue will email you closer to the date to discuss fabrics and links for the chain strap. Pattern included in the workshop

    On this 2nd part of our Overlocking Workshops you will learn to use your Overlocker to create decorative stitches. Using different threads and even fishing line and wire, you will create samples as well as making a box bag with a zip - all with your overlocker.

You will learn everything you need to know to make it fit perfectly, including inserting a concealed zip and facing. At the end of the workshop you will take home a perfect fitting skirt and the pattern to make many more.

    Making your own bra is fun project, On the workshop you will make a make your own seamless cup t-shirt bra and learn all the techniques needed to make more.  So, if you have always wondered how they are made here is your chance to find out.   Working with foam cups, stretch fabrics and small seam allowances mean that this is not a workshop for a beginner.

    The Sample Portfolio workshops allow you to build up a file of techniques to refer to when ever you need them. When you attend the first workshop you will receive a file to start building your porfolio then add to it on each workshop. Workshops In this series include, Zips, Seams and Hems, Pockets, Collars and Cuffs, Dressmaking Techniques, Advanced Dressmaking Techniques, Tailoring Techniques, The Importance of Pressing

    Your sewing machine will have arrived with basic machine feet but do you know what they all do? On this workshop you will learn to identify the feet you have as well as see what else is available. With approximately 25 different feet to try you will learn how to cord, bead, pipe, try different feet for stitching straight lines, hemming and taming difficult fabrics as well as neatening edges and creating decorative stitches. Take home lots of samples and notes and never have trouble choosing the correct foot for your project again.

    Sewing with Silk - 11th February 2020 FULLY BOOKED

    Sewing with silk can be tricky - on this workshop you will learn how to deal with this difficult fabric and make some pretty lingerie.  Learn to techniques for cutting out, correct seams and hems and if you would like to add lace then there are lots of tips to get the perfect finish.  You will also learn how to make those tiny rouleaux straps.

    What You Need To Bring : The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.

    Materials Needed :  You will need 1.25 - 2 meter of 150cm wide silk satin and a matching thread.

  9. Copy It Make It

    Copy It, Make It - 13th & 14th February 2020

    If you have a favourite garment that is wearing thin or no longer fits or a garment that you love but can not longer purchase then this is the workshop for you.

    Bring along your garment and learn to copy it without taking it apart.  Make your pattern then a toille and if there is time you can make a start on your finished replica garment.  You will also be writing your own pattern instructions.

    What You Need To Bring : The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.

    Materials Needed : the garment you wish to copy - I would recomend something made from a woven fabric (not stretch or on the bias) and with a few details like darts.  Fabric for your toille, calico or a similar weight fabric to your garment.  Fabric for your finished garment in case there is time to make a start.  Thread and notions.
