Dressmaking Workshops for beginners and those wishing to improve their skills.  Choose a specific garment, techniques to build a sample portfolio, an evening class, half day or sewing school.

If there is something you would like to learn but it is not shown or you can't make the date please do call and I will try to work around you.

Workshops at the Midhurst Sewing Room aim to inspire and improve skills while working in a relaxed atmosphere with likeminded students.

    The Dressmaker’s Portfolio is a six month foundation where students will learn all the skills needed to create a handmade wardrobe. 

    This course is a chance to build a portfolio of samples and garments which can be used to start your handmade wardrobe, take forward into higher education or a fashion related career.

    Level 1 – Beginners

    For beginners at the start of their sewing journey.  You will learn about measurements, fitting, commercial patterns and how to alter them, using a sewing machine and construction.

    Level 2 – Intermediate

    For those wishing to improve their skills.  Go over some of the basics, become confident using tricky fabrics, and learn advanced and couture techniques to achieve beautiful finishing and perfect fit

     THE DRESSMAKER’S PORTFOLIO PROJECTS

     Two projects will be set during the six months – these are to be done independently, outside of workshops.

     Level 1 – First Project – make a skirt or dress from a commercial pattern which has a fastening and neat seam and hem finishes.

                    Second Project – make a simple pair of trousers or jacket from a commercial pattern that is well fitting and finished

    Level 2 - First Project – make at least two coordinating garments from commercial patterns (dress, skirt or top)  with alternative seam & hem finishes (other than                                                       overlocked).  One garment should have a toile to show fitting and the addition of a detail not on the pattern or an accessory to compliment the                                             garment.

                  Second Project - make at least two coordinating garments from commercial patterns (dress, jacket or trousers) with alternative seam & hem finishes (other than                                            overlocked).  One garment should have a toile to show fitting and either the addition of a detail not on the pattern or an accessory to compliment                                          the garment.

    TUTORIALS/MASTERCLASS 

    Tutorials will be on a Monday morning, 10–12.30, twice a month.

    During the tutorial we will discuss students projects, talk about construction techniques making samples if required.

    We will also look at using social media for inspiration, I will give ideas of who to follow as well as introducing you to anything new and inspiring that I come across – whether it’s patterns, fabrics, designers or tools.

    This is also a time for you to ask for help with your projects

    Choosing the right fabric for your project is really important and there are so many out there!  On this workshop we will look at lots of different fabrics and discuss what they would be used for, take home samples and notes to add to your portfolio.

    Sewing with silk can be tricky - on this workshop you will learn how to deal with this difficult fabric and make some pretty lingerie.  Learn to techniques for cutting out, correct seams and hems and if you would like to add lace then there are lots of tips to get the perfect finish.  You will also learn how to make those tiny rouleaux straps.

    What You Need To Bring : The Sewing Room is fully equipped with Janome Sewing Machines and Overlockers as well as all the tools you need to complete your project.  You are very welcome to bring your own machine and sewing box if you wish.

    Materials Needed :  You will need 1.25 - 2 meter of 150cm wide silk satin and a matching thread.

    Your sewing machine will have arrived with basic machine feet but do you know what they all do? On this workshop you will learn to identify the feet you have as well as see what else is available. With approximately 25 different feet to try you will learn how to cord, bead, pipe, try different feet for stitching straight lines, hemming and taming difficult fabrics as well as neatening edges and creating decorative stitches. Take home lots of samples and notes and never have trouble choosing the correct foot for your project again.

    Three days of sewing, relaxing and socialising at the beautiful Dartington Hall Hotel in Totnes, Devon

    I will be creating a lovely sewing space in the Gate House at the Hotel which is light and airy with plenty of room for you to make a project of your choice.

    I will be on hand to help with lots of tips and techniques; there will also be demonstrations and talks from myself and guest speaker Jamie Kemp of Male Devon Sewing.

    Jamie will talk to us about his Sewing Story and experience on The Great British Sewing Bee in 2016 as well as giving us a demonstration of hand stitched buttonholes

    Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided each day with afternoon tea on Friday before you head home.

    You can choose to stay at the Hotel and enjoy breakfast (there will be a discount on room rates)

    What You Need To Bring : Sewing project including pattern, fabric & notions, machine with leads and accessories, extra light (optional).  Sewing Box.- Sewing Machines are available to hire from us at £10 per day
